Melissa Lucio is facing execution on April 27, 2022 in Texas for the alleged murder of her 2-year-old daughter Mariah.
Mariah was sentenced to death in 2008 despite the State of Texas presenting no physical evidence establishing that Melissa ever abused Mariah or any of her children. As a victim of repeated sexual abuse and domestic violence, Melissa suffers from dissociation and PTSD. When the police interrogated Melissa about the death of her daughter, she insisted that she did not kill Mariah. They continued to badger her, pushing her to accept that she was responsible for Mariah's death. After a coercive, five hour investigation, Melissa acquiesced and said, “I guess I did it.” She was pregnant with twins the night of the interrogation.
Coerced false confessions are a leading cause of wrongful conviction and even more prevalent among women wrongly convicted of killing a child, like Melissa. As it currently stands, Texas risks executing an innocent person.
