Dear Nevada Legislators,
We are writing to ask you to support repeal of the death penalty in the 81st legislative session.
Recent polling, from just a few months ago, shows a majority of Nevadans prefer alternatives to the death penalty and support legislation to repeal it during this legislative session. Nevadans understand the death penalty is rife with racial bias; almost 40% of the people on death row are Black, despite only accounting for 10% of the total state population. It is also exorbitantly expensive: each death penalty case costs roughly $532,000 more than a case where it is not sought. With more than 50 death cases pending at the trial level in Clark County and roughly 60 men already on Nevada's Death Row, the death penalty is costing Nevada taxpayers millions of dollars every year. In addition to its exorbitant cost, the death penalty always poses the risk of executing innocent people. At least three individuals have been released from Nevada's death row due to grave doubts about their guilt. Death penalty cases often take decades to litigate, far longer than cases where the punishment is life in prison without parole. This process often re-traumatizes the families of victims who are forced to relive the violent loss of their loved one over and over, with no guarantee the sentence will ever be carried out.
The death penalty does not serve Nevadans, is deeply and irreparably flawed, and offers a false promise to victims’ families. We must cut this wasteful spending and invest instead in programs that Nevadans actually need.
We urge you to support ending Nevada's death penalty.
Thank you for your time and consideration
